Our state government has structural flaws that keep it from fixing our problems, and our election laws block us from electing candidates who truly represent us.
This is how we will remedy these flaws:
General Assembly
- Make the General Assembly full-time to give our legislators the time they need to understand complex problems and develop effective solutions.
- Reduce the authority that the Speaker of the House and the Senate President have over their chambers to give our legislators more power to represent us.
State Departments
- Fully fund all departments.
- Require departments to stop unnecessary outsourcing and hire more public policy experts.
- Require departments to enforce state regulations.
- Require the Department of Environmental Management to obey the Natural Areas Protection Act of 1993.
Elections
- Adopt a proportional representation election system to improve voter representation in our government.
- Establish an independent redistricting commission to increase the fairness of electoral maps.
- Designate election day holidays to boost voter participation.
- Expand public campaign financing and reduce the amount individuals, state parties, and PACs can contribute to campaigns to shrink the amount of money in elections.
- Open up ballot access to take away the advantage well-financed candidates have to get on the ballot.
