fair taxation

Rhode Island’s tax system is unequal. It favors earners who make $625,000 or more, punishes workers who make $22,000 or less, and puts the burden of funding our government on the middle and working class.

From 1997-2009, legislators cut taxes for the rich, reducing revenue and forcing our state to raise fees, cut service, and underfund the maintenance and repair of public infrastructure.

Our tax system is unsustainable, and if we want a system that’s equitable and fair, we need to:

  • Raise taxes on the highest incomes, cut taxes on the lowest incomes, and unchain all workers
  • Increase state revenue
  • Lift all Rhode Islanders to a minimum level of wealth, comfortably above the poverty line

Our taxes are also being misspent. Many government services are outsourced to private companies which charge extra to make a profit and cost more. We need our government to do everything it can in-house at a lower cost without a profit.

Creating a fair tax system and spending our taxes efficiently is priority #1.
